SPIRIDON LOUIS, A GREAT ATHLETE


Spiridion Louis and also known as “Spyros” was born on the 12th of January 1873. He was a Greek athlete because of his birth in Maroussi, Greece. Spiridon was a great competitor in running events and he was the best Greek player during the first Olimpiad, which was celebrated in his place of birth. He won one gold medal in this first Olympic Games of the Modern Era: Athens, 1896.
Before competing in these Games he was a water merchant in Athens. These Olympic Games were the only ones in which Spiridon Louis participated. After this Games finished, he went to his birth city, where he worked as a farmer and then, as a police. Some years later, the 26th of March 1940 he died in Maroussi.
